How To Get Started with Home Care

The process of receiving home care follows a few simple steps, with slight variations depending on whether your services are self-paid or covered by Medicaid or Veterans Affairs (VA). Choose the option that best fits your situation to see what comes next.

Steps To Receiving Home Care With Medicaid Coverage

Phone Consultation

Share your situation and care needs so we can understand how to best support you and verify your Medicaid coverage or HMO plan.

Authorization & Coordination

We or your case manager will send an authorization request to your HMO. This process may take up to three weeks, depending on the plan. Once authorization is received, we confirm your active Medicaid status through the NJ Medicaid Portal, obtain your Medicaid number, and complete your client profile.

In-Home Assessment

A nurse visits to evaluate safety, health needs, and daily routines, then builds your personalized Plan of Care.

Caregiver Match

We pair you with a compatible, qualified caregiver.

Start of Services

Your caregiver starts services once your plan is approved.

Steps To Receiving Home Care With VA Coverage

Phone Consultation

Tell us about your care needs and VA benefits. We’ll help verify your eligibility or coordinate directly with your VA case manager for authorization.

Authorization & Coordination

Once approved, we receive the VA authorization and finalize the service plan aligned with your coverage level.

Our caregivers also assist clients recovering from illness, injury, or surgery, and offer temporary respite care for family caregivers.
Eligibility depends on age, medical needs, and the level of daily assistance required. Medicaid and VA-covered clients must complete an authorization and assessment process through their case manager, while private-pay clients can start services after their in-home assessment is completed.
Private-pay clients can often begin services the same day or within a few days after their in-home assessment. Medicaid and VA clients may need to wait several weeks for authorization or plan approval, depending on their case manager and insurance process.

Yes. Safe Harbor Homecare is affiliated with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Commission on Accreditation for Home Care (CAHC). We also work with major New Jersey HMOs—including Aetna, Horizon NJ Health, WellCare, and WellPoint—with United Healthcare partnerships in progress. These partnerships help ensure quality care and easier access to covered services.
Yes. We partner with multiple HMOs and managed care organizations. Coverage depends on your plan and eligibility, and many services may be fully or partially covered. Our team can help verify your benefits and guide you through any required authorizations or enrollment processes.
